Singing the praises of farms

Students at Sidney Elementary School are singing the praises of the Growing Young Farmers Program.

Close to 100 children filled the school gym recently to sing School Garden — or Growing Young Farmers Song, music written and composed by local singer/songwriter Paul Hann and the Grade 4/5 students.

With video cameras rolling and a recording system set up, Hann led the group of enthusiastic students in a couple rehearsals, followed by a final take. The kids were joined by the Growing Young Farmers Program founder David Friend (aka Mr. Organic).

“The Growing Young Farmers program has been championed by teachers who have not only welcomed me into their classrooms, but have wholeheartedly involved themselves in the program with their students,” says Friend.

The program educates students and encourages them to grow healthy, organic food as part of their normal school week.

The song will be burned to discs and sold as a program fundraiser.

The Growing Young Farmer’s Society brings topics such as organic gardening and agriculture to classrooms within the Greater Victoria area, and promotes food-security awareness within our community. For more, visit www.growingyoungfarmers.ca.
