Memorial Day to include living history

FOX LAKE | Fox Lake will offer a historic program for Memorial Day.

 

The day will consist of a parade on State Street at 10 a.m., a Memorial Day ceremony and then drills and living history at Riverside Park.

 

The living history will include Berdan’s United States Sharpshooters – Company G 1st USSS whom over 20 from the 100 man company came from Fox Lake and surrounding communities.

 

Keynote speaker Richard Smallwood Roberts will reflect on the story of the Denniston Brothers of Fox Lake Wisconsin and their sacrifice to preserver the Union during the Civil War. Three brothers, Hans, George, and John died from the conflict of 1861-1865 leaving their mother Elisa alone in Fox Lake.

 

Civil War Reenactors from the Citizens Guard will hold a living history for visitors to get a glimpse at the uniforms, drill, rations, camp life, and stories of the men during the Civil War.

 

There will be donation bins at the living history to help raise funds for the Fox Lake Historical Society’s Civil War timeline project telling the story of the five key units recruited from Fox Lake during the Civil War. These would consist of the Militia Companies of Fox Lake, Company A 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, Company D 8th Wisconsin Infantry,

 

Company E 29th Wisconsin Infantry, and Company G of Berdan’s 1st Regiment United States Sharpshooters.
