Your Quick Guide to the Systems of the Human Body

There are fourteen systems which make up the human body and allow us to function, it’s important to understand these systems so as to identify any issues we may have and decide how to best treat them.

Circulatory System  – The Heart and blood vessels which allow the pumping of blood around our bodies. This system allows the transport of vitamins, oxygen and nutrients around our bodies and allows the removal of waste matter to the organs which deal with excretion.

Dental System  – Teeth and the oral cavity. Allow the starting of the digestion process through chewing and breaking down of foodstuffs with the enzymes in saliva.

Digestive System – Mouth, throat, stomach, intestines, salivary gland, liver, pancreas. Breaks down food into vitamins and nutrients we need to function, removes the parts of food we can’t use to be excreted as faeces.

Endocrine System – Hormonal glands (Testes, ovaries, pancreas, adrenal glands etc.). Sends messages around the body to trigger all sorts of actions which allow the body to function.

Excretory System – Kidneys, liver, colon, lungs and sweat glands. The system which allows harmful or less useful substances to be removed from the body before they damage it.

Hearing System – Ears. The ears allow us to hear and they help to maintain our balance, allowing us to stand upright.

Immune System – Protects the body from foreign invasion from things like bacteria, viruses or fungi.

Muscular System – Muscles hang on the skeleton. They allow us to move by contracting or relaxing in groups.

Nervous System  – Brain, Spinal Cord and Nerves. The bodies central control system, stores, manages and gathers information. Responsible for your reading and understanding of your five senses and allows decision making

Reproductive System – Vagina, ovaries, breasts, penis, testes and prostate. Allow reproduction and sexual intercourse.

Respiratory System – Nose, lungs, air passages, mouth. Allows us to remove oxygen from the air and transport it around our bodies well expelling the waste carbon dioxide.

Sight System – Eyes. The system which allows us to see, incredibly delicate and require a lot of maintenance.

Skeletal System – Bones. The framework of the human body which gives us our shape and ability to stand rigidly.

Skin – Largest organ in the body. Protects muscles and allows us to feel touch and pain.
