Sugar Free Doesn’t Mean Weight Gain Free
If you’re trying to lose weight, or even just look after your wellbeing, you might have decided to replace sugar with artificial sweeteners. These sweeteners may be free of calories, and seem like the perfect weight loss solution but in fact they may be disrupting your weight loss, rather than helping it.
Your body has an automatic mechanism when it comes to all sweet foods, as they’re high in calories. Whenever you taste something sweet, your body prepares itself to receive a substantial amount of calories. Your metabolic system speeds up to meet your body’s pending digestive needs, which also raises your core body temperature.
An artificially sweetened item therefore confuses your body as it breaks the link between sweet taste and high calories. Your body has prepared for calories, and so demands you eat more and you can therefore over-eat, which naturally leads to the consumption of excess calories. Further, if all the sweet things coming in are low-calorie, your core body temperature will rise less and your metabolism will become sluggish. This means you’ll store more calories as fat instead of burning them off.
There is some evidence that strongly suggests that artificial sweeteners do not lead to weight loss, such as studies performed on rats. One study has revealed that consuming more diet soft drinks is linked to a greater risk of obesity. Though this remains to be directly proven in humans, the reasoning must be taken seriously if you want to ensure your wellness.
Still, this doesn’t mean you should pile up on sugar instead. Have sugar sparingly in your diet. Apart from obesity, there are other health risks associated with sugar, such as heart diseases and diabetes. However it will serve you well to remember that your body is probably too smart to be tricked. If there is a short cut to weight loss instead of a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise, switching to artificial sweeteners isn’t it.
