Empty Nest? Time to study.
Once the kids have flown the nest so to speak, it’s common for empty nest syndrome to sit in. What do you do now? For the last 18 years your life has been dominated by doing everything for your kids, being about for lifts, cooking and cleaning, helping with school work and generally being a parent. They’re suddenly gone and more than that, they’re off and making lives of their own. It’s about time you did the same!
It might well be time for you to get back to work or, indeed if you never got that degree, it might be time to put in the time necessary to get it! Having a degree can help you but unlocking career path’s which weren’t open to you before and raising your earning potential. Consider these things before going back to school:
What are your Skills?
Knowing what you’re good at and what interests you will help you to decide on a course of study. If you’ve already worked in one field or know what you love it do, then try and find yourself a course around those lines. Not only will the degree help you expand the knowledge you already have, it’ll help to rocket you through the ranks of the line of work and progress your desired career.
Costs are Key
Don’t sign onto any course without working out if you can afford it first .Colleges and Universities are more and more expensive and even though you’re no longer paying for the day to day costs of kids, you’ll still have bills and other things to worry about. There’s no rush for going back to school so don’t start a course until you’re absolutely sure you can afford it.
Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Chances are that students around your kids’ age won’t intimidate you. But it can be nerve racking to be the oldest student in a room. Remember that you’re there to learn and that most of the rest of the class won’t care how old you are in the slightest as they’re there for the same reason. Be friendly, open and amiable and you’ll make friends and be comfortable in no time!
