Family heartache led Scott Brown to Aberdeen

Brown joined Tranmere Rovers defender Ash Taylor in signing pre-contracts with the Dons earlier this week.

The 29-year-old, who will fight it out for the Pittodrie No 1 slot with Jamie Langfield, revealed how the loss of his father, Pete, to dementia and Parkinson’s, inspired him to move on and Brown said: “Once dad passed away there was nothing for us to stay for. That is what really made the decision.

“When he was ill I wanted to be around as much as possible, but unfortunately he passed away and it has been a difficult few weeks.”

Brown came through the ranks at Wolves but failed to make the grade and then had spells at Bristol City and Welshpool before spending 10 years at Cheltenham.

But the chance of swapping England’s League Two for a chance to play in Scotland’s top flight and the Europa League was too good to turn down.

“It was such a difficult decision for me to take, but I couldn’t turn the opportunity down to be involved at a club like Aberdeen and to work with Derek McInnes and Jim Leighton on a full-time basis,” said Brown.

“It’s an opportunity that rarely comes around.”

He knows he will have to fight to dislodge Langfield but has warned he isn’t moving to Scotland to sit on the bench.

“Every time I saw Jamie play he did well but I’m here to challenge him,” said Brown. “If he is playing I’ll be right behind him and I’m sure if I play he’ll do the same.”
