Asthma and the Plan of Action

Asthma is a condition which is fairly common and easily managed. It’s something which we’re used to seeing and people generally have a fairly good understanding of what the disorder entails , if not an understanding of just why it occurs. It’s linked to things like hay fever and is exacerbated by things like high-pollen count or dusty surroundings. As long as sufferers carry an inhaler and understand how to counter their condition they can live normal lives and think very little about their illness.

It’s common practise for hospitals and health centres to offer asthmatics and/or their parents or guardians asthma action plans. The idea being that by understanding how to deal with an emergency and the day to day necessities of asthma patients will look after themselves much better and suffer far less complications due to their condition. A study was recently completed which looked into these plans, trying to discern which, if any was the most effective and why.

Over thirty plans were analysed and it was found that though each was fairly effective in it’s own way, what would have been much more potent would have been an action plan specific to the individual patient. The issue here is whether the doctor would have enough time to do this for each asthmatic they treat, but then on the other hand if the doctor took the time just once the asthmatic in question would be less likely to need medical advice in the future meaning the doctor may actually waste less time in the long run.

If you or your loved one are a sufferer of asthma then we at Yourwellness recommend speaking to your doctor and reading several action plans to work out which set of instructions best suits your life style. Some things may not apply as much to you but all knowledge is good knowledge and knowing how to deal with the unexpected could save a life!
