What is the right approach to nutrition?

Nowadays we are bombarded with advertising messages about what is good nutrition. This happens not only in terms of food products (many of which are processed!) but also in terms of diet plans and exercise regimes. It leads many of us to fear the whole area and despair that we will ever be able to achieve a routine that seems so technically demanding! But, in actual fact when you turn away from the industry, it is clear that good nutrition is the simplest thing in the world.

First, it is important to establish your food values. Processed food has a devalued nutritional content; in fact there is a lot of research to say that it can be harmful, especially in the case of processed meat. Similarly, there are multiple threats from the agriculture industry, who favour the use of pesticides and Genetic Modification. As a rule, it is always best to go for fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. Additionally, buying local produce is not just good for the economy; it also gives the body what is appropriate according to the season.

A full range of nutrition is the best guide to wellness. Include a range of whole, natural foods like grains, nuts, vegetables and fruits. ‘Super foods’ are also worth looking into as many provide excellent sources of protein or other supplements. Spirulina and Flaxseed are valuable dietary supplements that provide a great source of protein and are particularly valuable for vegetarians. There is a growing consensus that meat should not be taken too often, if at all, and should be limited to lean white meat or fish. In fact, many studies suggest that meat-eaters have a life-expectancy up to ten years shorter than vegetarians. Wherever you stand on that particular debate, it is important to ensure that you are getting the right amount, and type of protein.

One failing of our modern ‘quick-fix’ mentality is that we think eating less will automatically make us thin. However, this is not the way to real sustained wellness, which includes you feeling healthy and vibrant, as well as feeling happy about your body-image. Ultimately, a good wellness routine incorporates a healthy diet as well as exercise – most importantly, it should be enjoyed! When taking the first steps in transformation it could be useful to consult a complementary therapist and take lifestyle advice that is tailored to you. You are your own project, and wellbeing is your destiny – we all deserve it!
