But the Millville (N.J.) High School football coach is convinced Ennis and his family wouldn’t have traveled nearly 12 hours if they weren’t serious about the Boilermakers. Ennis committed during his visit.

“I don’t think he went into it with a plan, at least to my knowledge,” Durham said. “I know he was serious about Purdue, otherwise he and his family wouldn’t have made that long trip. I know it was a real consideration for him.”

PURDUE RECRUITING: Texas safety

SEASON OUTLOOK: Magazines predict poor season

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Ennis becomes the program’s third 2015 commitment. He joins Kentucky quarterback Elijah Sindelar and Texas safety Andy Chelf as members of the recruiting class.

“They’re getting a great athlete. Tremendous speed, great vision – I think that’s one of the best things that describes him as a back,” Durham said. “He’s a great worker and he’s worked very hard at football his entire life. They’re getting the complete package with him.”

Ennis averaged nine yards a carry last season, rolling up 982 yards and 14 touchdowns. He took over the starting role as a sophomore after rushing for about 500 yards as a freshman. Ennis has more than 2,300 career rushing yards.

Durham said Rutgers, Old Dominion and Buffalo were among the schools to offer Ennis a scholarship. Ennis also plays safety and cornerback for Millville.

FASTEST PLAYER IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Purdue’s Mostert

FUTURE RECRUIT: Solid in commitment

With the Boilermakers losing Akeem Hunt, Raheem Mostert and Brandon Cottom after this season, depth is a priority. Freshman running back Dalyn Dawkins recently transferred.

“Purdue’s known to be a very good academic school,” Durham said. “It’s also a place where it sounds like he may have an early opportunity to compete on the football field. When you put it all together, it’s a good fit.

“One of the interesting things about Rob is he’s never been a kid that’s scared to go away. He’s been about trying to find the right place, whether it’s in New Jersey or California. He wanted to go to the best place and not worry about the location.”

Ennis also has experience playing against international competition. He’s been a member of Team USA’s U-15 and U-17 squads.
