Exploring thumb pain and the new way forward
Scientists are always looking for new ways to use existing drugs. It’s a kind of medicinal recycling which provides new and effective treatments for illnesses every year and with the advantage of not having to check the drug for safety or effectiveness, doctors can start prescribing them much quick than they otherwise could. Some medicines have found many different uses through this method and all sorts of weird and wonderful combinations have been put together in the past.
Arthritis is a condition which has a lot of potential treatments but no actual cure, it’s chronic and once you’ve got it all you can do is try and slow it down and hen deal with the pain. It’s a depressing prognosis but not one that’s likely to stay the same forever; things in medicine rarely do after all.
For those who suffer from arthritis of the thumbs, you’ll be aware how expensive the medication can be (especially if you live in the USA). A recent advanced study has shown that though these treatments may be effective at easing pain, there are others which are just as effective and will cost you far less money! One of these are corticosteroids which are readily available, cheap and already used to treat all sorts of other conditions with similar inflammatory natures.
What this means for those of you with arthritic thumbs is that, if before you couldn’t afford a treatment for the pain you’ll now be able to and if the traditional treatments didn’t work for you this one might do. It’s worth a try regardless and if it doesn’t work there were varying other treatments which showed a similar promise in the elimination of that thumb pain!
Give it a go and let us know what works well for you!
