Tourism Deptt finalizes the arrangements for Summer Festival

Srinagar: Tourism Department is organizing weeklong Summer Festival from June 21st. Different sports, adventure and cultural activities including Flat and White water rafting, Mountain Running, Paragliding, trekking, Shikarathon, water sports, Half Marathon, Triathlon, Sport climbing, Cyclothon, would be conducted at different places in the valley.
The Adventure Call Tours and Travels and Kashmir Adventures have been entrusted the responsibility of holding a two day long Flat Water Rafting Championship on the waters of river Jhelum in Srinagar. Ten teams from different organizations and clubs are taking part in the Championship. Director (Operations) Adventure Call, Muhammad Yusuf informed that Flat water championship is being organized first time in the state. It is a newly developed sport and has a national level governing body as well. “The competitions will be held in Sprint and Marathon within the Srinagar limits”, he further informed.

 

The Director Tourism Talat Parvez said that the championship will be held with an aim to restore the glory of our water bodies particularly Jhelum where many such regattas used to be conducted in the past. The other aim of the activity is to aware masses to avoid polluting Jhelum.

 

While, Mountain Running Championship would be conducted in Srinagar and Dudhpathri on June 22nd and June 26th respectively.

 

The J&K Mountain Running Association (JKMRA) has been entrusted the responsibility of holding these two championships.

 

The President JKMRA informed that nearly 200 boys and girls from different institutions are taking part in the “Heritage Run” from Badamwari to Hariparbat Fort and back, covering nearly 4.5 kms while the State Mountain Running Championship will be held at picturesque tourist resort Dudhpathri.

 

Those who perform well in the district championships would be selected for state championship. Mountain Running is a recognized sport and is played worldwide.

 

Talat informed that numbers of championships are held at local, regional and international levels in this sport world over and has thus become a big tourist product. This activity attracts thousands of tourists to Nepal to participate in Everest Run.

 

The JKMRA has expressed its gratitude to the tourism department for encouraging this sport in the state.
