England through to Quarter-Finals but France lead the way in Brive on FIRA-AER Grand Prix …
England Women Sevens will face Spain in the quarter-finals of the final leg of the FIRA/AER European Grand Prix on Sunday after securing two wins from three today (Saturday) in Brive, France.
England had been enjoying a winning run with victories over Germany and Wales but they came unstuck in the final game of the afternoon with hosts France running in 17-7 winners.
France took an early lead with two tries, but England clawed back the deficit with a converted Sarah McKenna try just before half-time. With the scores at 7-10 England were still in the hunt until the final play of the game when France broke away and scored the decisive try.
England Head Coach Simon Middleton, whose side won the first round of the Grand Prix series in Moscow last week, said: “France were the better team today, we made too many errors and didn’t play the way we wanted to so they deserved this win.
“This series is all about developing our players with the focus on the XVs for the Rugby World Cup in August at the moment and that is why games like this France are vital for our young players – they are pressure games. We’ll regroup tonight though and we are all really looking forward to playing Spain tomorrow.”
England scored 66 points in the first two rounds of the Brive tournament. England kicked off with a 33-7 win over Germany followed by a 33-7 win over Wales.
