Planned Parenthood Toronto hosts 2014 Choice Awards
Planned Parenthood Toronto honours sexual and reproductive health leaders from across Toronto at first ever Choice Awards
TORONTO, Sept. 15, 2014 /CNW/ – Planned Parenthood Toronto (PPT) is pleased to announce the winners of our first ever Choice Awards for excellence in sexual and reproductive health. For over 50 years PPT has been tirelessly working to promote and enhance sexual health among the youth and women of Toronto. On September 17th following our AGM, PPT will honour community members who have joined the movement to unapologetically revolutionize the sexual health dialogue in Toronto. Winners include Cynthia Loyst of CTV’s The Social, Karen B.K. Chan from Toronto Public Health, the Transgender Youth Clinic at the Hospital for Sick Children, and Heather Jarvis, co-founder of Slut Walk.
Loyst will be receiving a Sexual Health in the Media Award for her ongoing commitment to bringing sex-positive sexual health dialogue into the mainstream media. For her continuing work at the Toronto Public Health, Chan is being honoured with a Service Provider of the Year award. Also receiving a Service Provider of the Year award is the Transgender Youth Clinic at the Hospital for Sick Children for the opening of the new clinic this past year. Slut Walk, now a global day of action, was co-founded by two women in Toronto, including Jarvis who will be awarded the Youth Choice Award.
“As leaders in sexual health we realized that there are really few opportunities to celebrate and honour our community members working to promote choice for all across Toronto,” says PPT Executive Director Sarah Hobbs, “we couldn’t be more excited for this event.”
Local comedian and queer feminist writer Catherine McCormick will be emceeing the event, guaranteeing the evening will be a night to remember. McCormick has performed at comedy festivals in Boston, Chicago and Atlanta, as well as appeared on MTV Canada’s Losing It.
