How Can You Beat the January Blues?

The January blues tend to roll around once the last piece of Christmas wrapping paper is found, and the bottles from New Year’s have been recycled. You’ve been planning festive fun since Halloween, but now it’s just winter and there’s nothing to look forward to for a little emotional wellness boost. However, the January blues don’t need to take control of your life, and you can most certainly beat them.

Why not try rescuing an animal, or at least visiting a local shelter to give an animal without a home some time and attention? A happy puppy does wonders for your own emotional wellbeing, and if you can, why shouldn’t you adopt a pet and bring new life into your home? Your home space is another area of you life in which you can tackle the January blues. Could you do with a bit of a clear out and de-clutter? A cluttered home can be overwhelming, and difficult to clean, so, one room at a time, pick up a few items every day and ask yourself what purpose it serves, and if you really need it. Would you miss it if you gave it to someone else?

Lots of people feel the inclination to volunteer over Christmas, but there is still a need for help in January from those who are hungry, ill, homeless, or just in need of assistance in some way. Having too much time on your hands can make you feel blue, but using that time for someone else can really lift your spirits. If you don’t have the time but you have the money, why not donate to a local charity or one with a cause that is personal to you? You can also donate any de-clutter items that you’ve got no more use for. In the words of Mark Twain, ‘The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up’, so do something lovely for someone else. Open a door, smile at a stranger, run an errand for your mum – who knows, they might even pay it forward and the kindness will come back to you.

At home, make sure there are plenty of plants for a beautifully fresh feeling. Improve family wellness and get them round for a games night or do a jigsaw puzzle with the kids. Is there a hobby you’ve always wanted to try or a topic you’ve always wanted to learn more about? Take the plunge and expand your skills and your mind, the fun is in trying.
