Could Changing Your Garage Benefit Your Wellness?

If you want to improve family wellness, sometimes you need a little bit more breathing room to do and your garage could be a wellness-boosting oasis for everyone. Garages don’t need to function as a parking space or an extra loft to dump old stuff in. A little creativity can turn your garage into your dream room, as long as you have planning and neighbour permission, and your family all agrees on how to use the space. You might also need to consider your needs for water, electricity, heat, additional lighting, and insulation or sound-proofing before you make any changes.

Make your garage into a haven for your hobbies. Do you do you like to sew or have a sewing group? Maybe there’s some sort of craft you enjoy doing that would benefit from extra ‘creating’ and storage space – you could even sell your crafts out of your garage, though this may require approval from the proper authorities and your neighbours. If your hobby of choice involves building and fixing things, you can use your garage to store, organize, clean, sharpen, and repair your tools, which is a great idea as workshop spaces are difficult and expensive to come by.

Perhaps you just need a den or a cave for a little bit of ‘me time’. Fill your garage with all the comforts you want – whether that’s a bookcase and a comfy arm chair, or a pool table and a fully stocked fridge. However, if you are going to install any expensive luxuries like a TV or sound system, make sure you have a good security system. If you need more space for business over pleasure, you can easily utilise your garage for a business, a writing career, or a study room for any students living in your home. However, if you are so inclined as to give over your new space to the kids, your garage could become an ‘anything goes’ play area, with safe boundaries, such as panels and baby gates, heavy rubber matting, an area with thick carpeting and a comfy chair or bean bag that can be easily cleaned. Then all you need is a few toys and maybe a kid or two.

Finally, you can use your garage to particularly improve your wellness. With appropriate flooring, mats, bars, and a sound system, your garage could make a great yoga or dance studio. Or get those green fingers wiggling and install more windows, grow lights, and work stations for tools, soil, and plant material. Lastly, if you take care of animals, such as exotic birds, you might want to repurpose your garage with sound-proofing and easy-to-clean walls and floors, as well as appropriate lighting, shelving and climbing stations. With a little creativity, the garage is your oyster!
