Build Up Your Kids’ Bone Bank: Why You Need To Start Now

It’s never too late to start thinking of our wellness and putting in place healthy eating plans and physical activity routines. When it comes to bones it looks like it’s also never too early to start protecting ourselves and our families from osteoporosis.

 

Strong for life

 

Our bones cells are a bit different from other cells in our body. They all undergo renewal throughout our life with this process slowing down as we get older, but bone density reaches a certain level in our late 20s then begins to decline as the years go by. Unlike our skin cells for example, there isn’t a limitless number being produced. Scientists have known for a while that most bone density is laid down in our teens, making this a very important time to care for our wellbeing and that of our children, so they have strong bones to take them through life. A new study now shows how we can further boost bone mineral density (BMD) in our young people.

 

Bone supplements

 

The Australian School of Exercise Science studied the BMD of twin girls after one twin was given calcium and Vitamin D supplements to boost bone cell production, while the second twin got a placebo. The girls were aged between nine and 13-years old and their BMD was measured before the trial and six months later. The results showed that supplements improved bone development, indicating that boosting the levels of these minerals in prepubescents may reduce their chances of getting osteoporosis later in life. The National Academy of Sciences recommends that young people aged from nine to 18 take 1,300 mg of calcium a day and approximately 50 ng/mL of Vitamin D a day, but this can be established after chatting with our GPs. As well as taking supplements, our children’s younger years are a prime time to introduce healthy eating habits and hobbies that build bone density and look after their health in general.
