The Evolving World Of Work And What This Means

The world is always changing and with that change comes advantages and disadvantages. With new technologies come new ways of doing business and new ways to learn. If the working men and women of fifty years ago were to walk in to a modern office they’d be astounded. The basic formats may still be the same but the way we go about our work is very different and much more flexible. Technology and people simply expecting more in terms of freedoms and trust have made sure that the workplace adapts with the times and people.

It’s a common misconception that working from home is in some way a holiday. I can remember when I started doing it I got a lot of knowing winks and eye rolls when I said I had to work Monday and Tuesday from home. ‘But you’re at home…’ This incredulous statement always made me laugh. Having the ability to work from home is a form of trust between an employer and an employee. The employer needs to trust that all work will be done to an acceptable level and the employee needs to trust that their own time isn’t going to be compromised with a ‘you can work from home so you should always be working at home’ mentality.

It’s a tricky balance to make but it’s becoming more and more common as people try and balance work around other commitments. The flexibility of the workplace is one of the major changes in it and such flexibility is only possible because of the connectivity which new technologies allow. You can contact anyone at any time and have full access to all the resources at the office from the warmth and comfort of your own home. If you’re on the move this doesn’t have to stop either, with laptops and tablets getting smaller and being able to do so much more you can be catching up on work at anytime, anywhere.
