It’s nowt but Gout. But Could you be at risk?
Arthritis is the name for over 200 different conditions which affect the mobility of the joints. Each different kind damages the body in a different way and as such the treatment for each is different. This is the reason the disease is so difficult to treat fully, there are simply so many different varieties of arthritis it would take a long time to effectively cure all of them.
The most common form of arthritis is gout which was once known as the disease of kings due to some of the causes of this condition. It’s so common now that it’s said that over 2% of the population of the entire world suffers from it or has at some point in the past.
Now, gout is generally understood to be caused by a rich diet and too much drinking. Essentially the body either produces too much uric acid or doesn’t filter it out as effectively as it should be doing. When uric acid build up in the body it leaves tiny uric crystal deposits in the joints, these are an irritating and cause an inflammatory reaction. Inflammation in the joints leads to intense pain and a loss of mobility in those areas.
What’s recently become apparent is that gout actually has as many as 18 genetic variations which increase susceptibility. You could actually be predisposed to contracting this condition. Studies in the causes of conditions are very important especially when genetic components are revealed, this is because when you know someone’s at risk of a condition you can help them take steps to lower their risk factors in the other aspects of their lives. So cutting down on drinking and eating would be wise for someone who’s discovered to be likely to suffer from gout! This research could improve the quality of life for a lot of people.
