Why Walnuts? Science Reveals Your Bone Benefits

Natural remedies are often a good way to heal wellness issues because they usually don’t have many – if any – side effects. There are lots of ways that we can treat brittle bones and scientific studies recently showed how we can rely on more than medication to enhance our wellbeing in this area.

Why treat brittle bones?

Our skeleton weakens as we get older because we don’t build bone mineral density (BMD) after our late 20s. We rely on the BMD stores that have been laid down up until this point. Although it’s a natural process to lose bone cells, they can become so porous that they will break easily and we are diagnosed with osteoporosis. It’s possible to prevent getting this condition, but it’s called a silent disease as many of us don’t know we have it until we fracture a bone and have BMD tests. Medication may be prescribed at this point, and tips on what foods to include in our meals. A study by the University of California shows that a new food is getting attention for helping to increase our bone strength.

Natural foods

In the research, walnuts were found to lower the rates at which bone is lost, as well as having other health benefits, like lowering blood cholesterol levels. The nut also helped to promote muscle building, which can have the knock-on effect of making our bones stronger. Scientists aren’t exactly sure why walnuts have this dramatic effect on our wellness. Some experts put it down to the high omega-3 fatty acid content of the whole food. Other clinicians say the health benefits are down to how all the nutrients in walnuts work together – which is called the synergistic effect. This makes the walnut an ideal addition to our meals and salads if we want to preserve our bone cells as much as possible.
