Would The British Abortion System Benefit From Changing With The Times?
Abortion is an issue right across the world. It’s not an easy decision for a lady and it’s made even harder when the world seems out to get her for having one. The fact remains that it’s your body and what you do to and with it is and should remain your business and nobody else but your doctor’s. Abortion has been legal in Britain for a long time and as such doctors and patients tend to not even think about it so much anymore but the fact is that our current laws and regulations may need updating.
It’s become normal for doctors to sign off on abortions without actually taking the proper time to meet with their patients. In the current law it takes two doctors to agree that both the child and the mother’s lives would be significantly worse if the child was born, for an abortion to be okayed. One of the traditional ways of this happening is if the doctors see the mother at risk of developing mental health conditions due to their pregnancy. It’s recently been shown that doctors and their pregnant patients actively pretend to be at risk of mental health issues so as to easily and quickly sign off on abortions.
Whether you think this shows a problem with the system or that the system needs to evolve or adapt is entirely your choice. What many women have said is that they’d like counselling to be part of the way abortions are dealt with. For those who go through the process this should be offered as a basic form of coping, it can be very difficult to accept not having a child. It should also be offered for those who are refused abortions, as it might be even harder to cope with the realisation that you’re actually going to have a child.
