Five Cures For Work Related Stress

If you want to reduce your stress levels and increase your productivity at work, you need to be able to relax. From upping your physical activity to learning how to switch off before bed, there are various ways that you can relieve your mind of stress and get through the working week far more easily. Here are five top tips on how to make sure that 9am on Monday morning isn’t quite so much of a burden.

Before arriving at the office

If you’ve got a busy day ahead, with presentations, stressful meetings and new projects to contend with, try taking five minutes out of your morning routine to meditate. It may seem like a counter-productive way to relieve stress, by adding an extra task into your already packed routine, but it will help you focus and calm your nerves. Sit in a quiet place and focus on your breathing – if your mind wanders, try to focus on one specific and calming thought to bring it back.

At your desk

You can still do stress relieving techniques during the day, even if you’re at work. Opt for a relaxing screensaver and inhale deeply for ten minutes – you can do this on your lunchbreak when you’ll be free to let your mind relax and unwind a little. Take in a deep breath, hold it for five seconds and then release – repeat this several times and you’ll notice a change in your stress levels.

During your lunch break

Find a quiet spot near your work, such as a park or a nearby bench, and jot down your thoughts in a diary or a journal. Getting your thoughts onto paper can help you make sense of them and allows you chance to take stock of your day, so you can focus on the tasks you have to deal with.

On your commute

If you’re a driver, you’ll no doubt be aware of how easy it is to get caught up in road rage on the drive home. Use this time to unwind and let your mind escape from work mode, maybe through listening to music.

After you get in bed

We’ve all been there – your body is exhausted but your mind won’t stop long enough to let you sleep. If you suffer from this a lot, you may benefit from a few relaxation techniques before resting for bed. Try flexing your muscles and limbs whilst you lie in bed and imagine them melting into the mattress, entirely relaxed. As you do this, your mind will have chance to unwind and eventually you’ll be able to fall asleep easily.
