Which Dairy Is Best For Your Bones?

When it comes to calcium a lot of people think that simply eating a lot of ice cream will do. While it’s true there is some calcium in ice cream, there isn’t as much as there is in milk or yoghurt. It can come as rather a shock to people that different kinds of dairy products have different levels of calcium in them. Some can actually be damaging to bones if consumed to excess. It’s always best to shoot for the healthier version of whatever it is you’re going to eat.

Calcium is indeed incredibly important for the growth and development of healthy bones. Without it your skeleton will weaken and you’ll become much more prone to damage and even fractures. Of course, without vitamin D the body can’t process the calcium you take in and vitamin D is most commonly absorbed through the skin from sunlight. So, drink all the milk you want in a dark room and you’re still going to wind up with a weakened skeleton. The right balance is incredibly important in pretty much every aspect of our lives and this is especially true of our diets.

What was a bit of an unknown until very recently was that different types of dairy products have different levels of effectiveness when it comes to improving the health of your bones. Things like cream or ice-cream aren’t as good for us as yoghurt and milk. Not only do they not contain as much calcium but they have much higher levels of sugar and far. So, the excuse of ‘there’s calcium in it’ for eating ice-cream might not hold as much weight as it once did! Of course, all dairy products have some calcium in them so this shouldn’t overly concern you. Doctors recommend between 2.5 and 3 servings of either milk or yoghurt a day to maintain a healthy set of bones.
