Are Seniors More At Risk With STDs?
Throughout our lives, it is likely that some of us have romantic stories to tell and for some, the stories never end.
Whilst we assume that they think more about retirement than being promiscuous, for an interesting majority of senior citizens, the fun never stops. At ages of fifty years old and over, the friskiness hasn’t faded away. In doing so, the risks of STDs are still present – and more of a concern than ever.
So why is it so abundant?
With such modern, medical advances, men are able to have sex at an elderly age with the use of such medicines such as Viagra. Furthermore, the increase of people’s lives as well as the growing divorce-rates have meant a variety of dating opportunities between younger and older. The loss of a marriage partner has not put off seniors from thinking about their love lives whilst they are still active. With the growing influx of dating websites, newspaper personals and cheeky chats, the dating world has suddenly become significantly bigger. According to gynaecologists, eighty percent of people aged fifty and over are still having an active and healthy sex life.
What this also means however is that the risks affect more than just one generation – whilst treatable, the risks of pregnancy are no longer prevalent by the time individuals hit fifty years old. The notion of protection isn’t a problem unless a disease has been contracted – and how would anyone know? The most prominent of STDs found in senior citizens in particular have been cases of chlamydia and syphilis, the rates of which have tripled in recent studies.
For some doctors, they have come to the realisation that their fellow practitioners should not assume that elderly patients are no longer having sex.
So if you’re still bending the bedsprings, remember to protect yourself to a long, happy and if you’re lucky, everlasting sex life.
