Can You Eat To Beat Tiredness?
Maybe you had a bad night’s sleep, perhaps you’ve got a lot on at work or you’ve been burning the candle at both ends – whatever the reason, if you are feeling tired and sluggish, the food you are eating could be exacerbating the situation (or even causing it!). Rather than instinctively reaching for Red Bull, coffee or your favourite chocolate bar, try cleaning up your dietary habits to put that spring back in your step.
In general, all foods give you energy but there are those that are better at providing the power kick you need without driving you into a sugar coma. For example, beetroot can increase the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood whilst reducing the amount of oxygen that muscles require to function optimally. Kale’s superfood status extends to energy with its protein, fibre and high levels of antioxidants and it’s the antioxidant profile in blueberries that help fight fatigue inducing free radicals. Other top energy foods include eggs, fish, lean meat, dark green vegetables, citrus fruits, raw cacao, quinoa, lentils and whole grains.
