You know what men are like, there are certain things they consider important in life (football, beer, page three of The Sun) and certain things they don’t (dusting, buying flowers for a loved one, making a casserole).
Add to the latter list going for a health check, for it’s a well known fact that men, in general, don’t bother going to their GP.
But new year, new start and all that, or at least that’s what Blackpool’s Victoria Hospital is hoping.
Over the festive period the hospital held a Santa Health Check for Men, which offered free access to a variety of services including lung health checks, blood sugar tests, sexual health, healthy eating, alcohol and stop smoking advice.
It was a big success, so much so that there are more events planned for 2014.
“It was a fantastic success. We saw well over 30 men in one day access a service they may never have heard of or have never had the opportunity to take advantage of before,” said Rachel Swindells, Public Health Facilitator at Blackpool Victoria.
“Thanks to the wonderful support of both The Blackpool Gazette and Radio Wave, we have seen far more men than we had hoped for, which is brilliant.
“Traditionally men don’t access health services anywhere near as much as women but today has shown that by making it fun men will engage and come and take part.”
The Santa Health Check for Men brought together a number of services from across Blackpool and another one-off is planned soon.
