Battersea health worker receives top prize
A healthcare assistant who works at the Junction Health Centre in Battersea has been named sexual health practitioner of the year.
Tinu Oluwatoyin was presented with the award by comedian, novelist and actor Jenny Eclair on March 14 at the UK Sexual Health Awards 2014 in central London.
She was nominated by colleagues for “always going the extra mile” and her significant contributions to an HIV awareness and testing campaign.
The judges of the awards commended her for “going above and beyond what was expected of her” and inspiring her co-workers.
Collecting the award, Ms Oluwatoyin thanked her colleagues and manager for their support, and said “It is important that we raise awareness of sexual health issues, and ensure people don’t bury their heads in the sand.”
Also collecting awards were Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, journalist Louise Tickle for a story about sexual abuse in schools, and BBC soap Casualty for a storyline about female genital mutilation.
Ms Oluwatoyin shared her award with South Tyneside nurse Elaine Doherty.
