Angling: Hutson gets among the cod
TOP Cleethorpes angler Garry Hutson has struggled to find a single cod all season – but that all changed in the latest Humber SAC match on the Humber Bank Wall.
Not only did he break his duck for the season, but he also finished up with five to easily win the match.
Hutson, pictured, managed to cast further than most of his competitors and, using top-quality bait, he caught codling to 2.8lb. He had a top weight of 10.14lb.
This catch showed the class of Hutson, as the next angler to Gary had two flounders for 1.7lb.
That was none other than fellow first-class angler Karl Nangle.
Nangle will be hoping that his flounder-catching skills are with him this afternoon for the Flounder Open on Cleethorpes seafront.
Pay-in is at Cleethorpes RNLI from 1pm, with fishing from 3.30pm to 6.30pm.
There is a limit of 30 pegs and so it is hoped they will all be taken.
The codling have been more prominent all week and the lower tides have allowed anglers to fish the woods and yellow cross area.
The fish that are being caught look to be a spring run and fresh into the river.
I also understand that there has been a run of codling along the Lincolnshire coast and there is also a chance of some bass as well.
The Yorkshire coast has also benefited from a run of spring codling.
On the boats in the Humber, the sport has been pretty good with plenty of fish around the three pound mark.
If you go further up the river – especially on the lower tides – you seem to get better results.
If you’re after bigger fish, the Grimsby middle and the 5a buoy have been producing fish up to double figures.
