Angling: Big Champs roster is filled as Chapman hauls a beast

THE upcoming Club Championships are now fully booked with 11 teams set to fight it out later this year for the prestigious title.

NATS, Jubilee, Pelham, Westlands, Havelock Academy, LOR, Happy Hookers, Nags Head, Novartis, Carr Lane and United Anglers will go head-to-head at the event, which will be held at Wold View fisheries on September 27.

The only team that has dropped out this year is Old Clee and they have been replaced by Havelock Academy.

It is fantastic to see a young team coming into the match and Terry Jackson, of Wold View, has kindly paid for the lads to take part.

Havelock are going to be staging an inter-schools match at the fisheries later this year.

If any schools are thinking of taking part and need any help, I am sure that some of the local clubs would be willing to offer their members’ advice.

It has also been decided that next year’s match will also be held at Wold View on the last Saturday in September.

On to the fishing, and Tim Chapman had a shock when fishing at Peter Clayton’s pond at North Thoresby.

He hooked a fantastic 15lb pike which took his 8m pellet and he carefully played the fish in thinking it was just a big bream.

But he had a shock when it came closer and was amazed to see this big predator slide into his landing net.

However, unfortunately for Chapman it did not count.

The only angler to find the fish in any numbers was Graham Garrod, who had an aquarium in front of him.

He had a mixture of carp and bream for 57lb.

Next in was Peter Bensley with 8.8lb, followed by myself, with 6.12lb.

I should have had more, but two carp made their escape by breaking my line.

The next match on this water is next Sunday with the draw at 9am.

Again, it will be a dawn rover over the two ponds.

It is hoped that the water warms up as, once it does, I am sure that the weights will quickly increase.

Over at Saltfleetby fishery, and the main pond was in fine form this week.

With another bumper weight, Caistor’s Mark Critcher weaved his magic on peg 24 to catch 88lb.

Following him was the ever-present Lloyd Lakin, who tempted the carp from underneath the tree on peg 15 for 73lb. Third was Glen Hugil on peg 23 for 62lb.

Last Thursday, Chris Griffiths, fishing the Island pond, managed to find a few fish off peg 2 for 29lb.

Rob Mills was second with 26lb off peg 19, while Barry Osborne caught the fish late on, but just could not catch up, as he finished with 21.12lb.

At Wold View, the Silver lake fished very well on the Saturday and it seems to be the in-form water at the moment.

Alex Ward was the main man with 48lb off peg 24, followed by Bill Sheppard, who is in blistering form at the moment – he managed 46lb off peg 20.

Norman Hewliss was third with 35lb off peg 5.

On the Sunday, the Open match was on Gold Pond and Ash Ottley was on one of the favourite pegs – number 35.

It did not disappoint as he brought in 27lb to take first place.

Dave Berry, who is another angler on a fine run of form at the moment, had 21lb from peg 12. Following him was Chris Mack with 19lb from peg 20.

At Messingham Sands, the Islands Lake provided another treat for anglers in the latest round of the Silverfish-Only Spring League.

With an average of over 40lbs per man and five weights between 50lbs and 58lbs, the event was not only prolific in terms of fish caught but also provided a close result.

Hull angler Rob Chaffer took the plaudits with a stunning Perch weighing in at 4lbs 1oz.

Although Rob was thrilled to have caught such a huge specimen, he was a little disappointed as the fish was foul-hooked in the tail.

Grimsby’s Andy Bryant just pipped Scunthorpe angler Neil Vessey into second place with an excellent 58lbs 11oz from peg 10.

Carl Braithwaite found some good Carp in the Wednesday Open on the Swan Pond. Carl finished on 93lbs, with fish to low double figures taken on pellet fished on a small method feeder. He drew the same peg on the Sunday open and repeated his winning ways, this time with 65lbs of Carp.

Merry,s Pool has also fished really well for both match and pleasure anglers, Individual Carp up to 18lbs in weight have been landed and match weights to 97lbs have been recorded this week.
