Green’s goal in OT lifts lacrosse to MLC victory

 

 

Hanover’s Josh Green’s scored a goal in overtime to lift the men’s lacrosse team to a 9-8 Midwest Lacrosse Conference win over Elmhurst (Ill.) on Saturday at L.S. Ayres Field in Hanover.

 

Hanover led 8-7 with 6:50 to play in the fourth period before the Blue Jays tied the game in the final minute of regulation to force the overtime.

 

After Elmhurst (4-6, 2-3 MLC) came up empty on its first possession in the extra frame, Green came through for Hanover when his shot from 20 yards out secured the Panther win just 1:35 into the extra period.

 

The Panthers led 5-0 early in the contest before Elmhurst spent much of the second and third periods trimming away at the deficit and eventually tying the game 6-6 in the third period.

 

The two teams were tied again at 7-7 in the fourth before the final sequence of goals that led to the final 8-8 tie and the overtime.

 

Green, a junior from Beaumaris, Australia, led Hanover with three goals. Chris Baney and Luke Karnick had two goals each while Nick Hermes and Derek Coe scored one each.

 

Junior Zac Cheatle picked up a season-high seven ground balls and Green also set a season-best with six. Addison Sears collected 11 saves in the Panther net with six of those coming in the fourth period.

 

Hanover (9-3, 5-2 MLC) visits Transylvania (Ky.) on Wednesday for a non-conference match with the Pioneers (3-7).

 

 

Bader repeats as medalist of Hanover golf invitational

 

Robert Bader earned his second consecutive Hanover Invitational title and led Hanover’s men’s golf squad to a second-place finish. The 36-hole tournament was held at Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour.

 

Bader, who has three top-two finishes in the annual event, posted back-to-back rounds of 70 en route to four-under-par 140 (70-70) and win medalist honors by five strokes.

 

Hanover totaled 596 (297-299) to finish eight shots behind Davenport (Iowa) for the team crown. Davenport, spurred by five golfers in the top 10, fired a combined 588 (293-295).

 

Rose-Hulman was third among eight teams with a 608 (308-300).

 

Hanover’s P.J. Greene, who earned his second consecutive top-four finish, had a 148 (72-76) on the 6,724-yard course. Patric Geary and Johnny Vidal tied for 20th in the 69-man field. Both players posted a 154. Geary had a three-over 75 in the second round, while Vidal closed with a 78.

 

Matt Ehman completed Hanover’s quintet in 53rd with a 166 (82-84).

 

Jaron Stiers and Brad Baumann, playing as individuals, each notched top-20 finishes. Stiers was 13th with two straight rounds of 76 (152). Baumann shared 20th with Geary and Vidal after posting a 154 (76-78).

 

Northwestern Ohio’s Keith Long placed second overall with a 145 (71-74). Davenport’s Jorge Benitez posted a 146 (73-73) for third place.

 

Hanover competes in the Defiance (Ohio) Invitational on Saturday.

 

 

Wilson, Overton belt homers in softball split with Manchester

 

Hanover used three home runs in the second game to earn a split of a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Manchester on Sunday.

 

Tori Wilson belted two home runs and Shelby Overton launched one to propel Hanover to a 10-4 victory in the second game. The Panthers built a big lead before falling 9-8 in eight innings in the opener.

 

Hanover (12-10; 2-2 HCAC) trailed 2-0 after one inning in the second game, but reeled off eight straight runs to seize an 8-2 lead in the fourth. Manchester cut the margin to 8-4 with a run each in the fifth and sixth innings. The Panthers, however, sealed the victory with two runs in the seventh.

 

Wilson finished 2-for-4 with two homers, two runs and a career-high six RBIs. She smacked a her first collegiate grand slam in Hanover’s four-run third inning and followed that with a two-run shot in the seventh.

 

Overton was 3-for-4, including a solo homer in the second inning, and scored twice.

 

Megan Hogston, Danielle Merrick and Gabrielle Ritchey each had two hits to supply the Panthers’ 12-hit attack.

 

Christina Davidson recorded the victory with a complete-game effort. Davidson (3-3) scattered 12 hits with four runs through seven innings. She walked two and posted one strikeout.

 

In the first game, Hanover led 7-0 before Manchester rallied to force extra innings. The Spartans (5-13; 2-4 HCAC) snapped an 8-8 deadlock with a run in the bottom of the eighth to swipe the win.

 

Hanover had seven hits, but left 14 runners on base and also committed five errors. The miscues all came after the third inning and helped fuel the Spartans’ rally.

 

Leah Kemmerer was pegged with her second loss of the season after allowing 12 hits and nine runs in seven and two-thirds innings. Just three of the runs were earned for Kemmerer (8-2), who walked three and posted seven strikeouts.

 

Wilson had two hits and scored a run for Hanover. Breann Truelove had a base hit, walked three times, knocked in one run and scored three runs. Lyndsea Burke and Ritchey each had two RBIs.

 

Hanover hosts Transylvania (Ky.) on Tuesday.

 

 

Men’s tennis beats two for first wins of season

 

Hanover men’s tennis picked up its first two wins of the spring with a 7-2 victory over Oakland City on Saturday and an 8-1 win over Thomas More on Sunday, both non-conference matches at the Zeddis Tennis Center on campus.

 

The Panthers took two of three matches in doubles play and five of six in singles action to beat Oakland City. Hanover swept all three doubles matches and five of the six singles against Thomas More.

Chambers leads women’s track to fifth at DePauw

 

Hanover women and men track and field teams competed in the DePauw Outdoor Invitational on Saturday in Greencastle.

 

In the women’s meet, Hanover finished fifth with 71 points. Bethel won the meet with 145 points while Taylor (136), St. Joseph’s (129) and Vincennes (100.5) rounded out the top five.

 

Hanover junior Briahna Chambers scored two top three finishes in the meet. Chambers won the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 7.25 inches and placed second in the 100 meter dash in 12.57 seconds.

 

Frances Larson scored the other Panther event win. Larson won the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 2.25 inches.

 

Freshman Olivia Hewitt, a Switzerland County graduate, also competed in the high jump and placed fourth with a 4-8.25.

 

Fellow freshman Savannah Hubbard, a Southwestern graduate, was second in the triple jump with a combined distance of 33 feet, 3.25 inches while Jordan Moseby was third in the 100 hurdles in 15.30 seconds and Rachel Smith was fourth in the 800 meter run at 2:23.71.

 

In the men’s portion of the meet, Hanover was 11th with 24 points. Vincennes claimed the men’s title with 147.5 points. Rose-Hulman (108), Bethel (100.5), Wabash (100.33) and Taylor (76) rounded out the top five.

 

Hanover sophomore Joe Feldmann placed second in the 400 meter run in 50.68 seconds and the 400 relay team of Anthony Pizzo, Enrico Franchini, Tyler Arceneaux and Torrey Gardiner finished fourth in 43.64 seconds.

 

Both teams compete in the Indiana DIII Championships at DePauw on Saturday.

 

 

Baseball swept in HCAC doubleheader at Bluffton

 

Hanover baseball found runs hard to come by on Saturday, dropping a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bluffton (Ohio).

 

In game one, Hanover fell 9-0 after stranding eight runners on base and going 1-for-12 in the game with runners in scoring position.

 

Bluffton led 2-0 after the first four innings but added three runs in the bottom of the fifth, two runs in each the seventh and eighth frames.

 

Hanover junior Matt Newman came up with his second career four-hit game including two singles and two doubles. The Panthers had just six hits as a team.

 

Mitch Hunnicutt received the start on the mound and was tagged with the loss. Hunnicutt threw six and one-third innings giving up seven runs including five earned on 10 hits while striking out six.

 

Hanover fell 5-2 in game two after falling behind early in the contest.

 

Bluffton (10-11, 3-6 HCAC) grabbed a 4-0 lead after the first inning before the Panthers plated across a run in the top of the second to trim the deficit to 4-1. The Beavers pushed the lead back to 5-1 after the fourth inning and allowed just one more Panther run in the game to claim the three-run victory.

 

Hanover scattered around eight hits in game two with freshman Austin Holloway, a 2013 East Central graduate, leading the way with two. Ryan Johns and Zack Shultz each had an RBI.

 

Andrew Roby picked up the loss on the hill after going six complete innings. Roby gave up five runs including four earned on nine hits while walking two and striking out six.

 

Hanover (7-12, 3-6 HCAC) hosts HCAC rival Franklin on Tuesday.
