The Red Wolves bowling team looks to finish off their season strong this weekend during the NCAA Tournament in Wickliffe, Ohio.
The Red Wolves, who are ranked No. 1 nationally in the NTCA Coaches as well as media poll, are set to begin tournament play Thursday morning, bowling one five-person match against the other seven teams at the tournament for a total of seven games.
A-State finished their regular season play back in March with a fourth place finish at the UCM Invitational and a second place finish at the Music City Classic.
While the fourth place finish looks a bit out of place for the Red Wolves, the results from the last day of the tournament show hard fought losses throughout the end of the UCM Invitational.
On the second day of the UCM Invitational A-State finished with a 2-3 record but recorded the second highest total pinfall of the day. The losses at this tournament came at the hands of UW-Whitewater 935-929, Sam Houston State 1,074-1,056 and Louisiana Tech 1,009-934.
This tournament would not get a chance to fully play out with the final day being cancelled due to threat of inclement weather.
The Music City Classic was a showing that even a team with four first place finishes this season, as well as three other top three finishes, can have an off day.
On the final day of the tournament A-State took down the top seeded Fairleigh Dickinson University 4-1 with relative ease.
The Red Wolves registered the first two wins over FDU in impressive fashion by winning 226-144 in game one and then 212-150 in game two. A-State grabbed a win by a small margin of seven 205-198 in game three before losing game four 250-226. The Red Wolves dominance was fully shown in the final game against FDU when they won 279-192.
A-State then went on to face Vanderbilt, the tournament host, in the championship where they lost 4-1.
While the 4-1 number looks bad, just as in the UCM Invitational the numbers reflect that if there was to be a loss that it would be hard fought until the end.
Vandy took game one with a fairly decent lead over A-State by a score of 226-173, but the Commodores narrowly won game two by a score of 220-216.
The Red Wolves took game three 226-205, but Vandy would go on to win the tournament with a low scoring game four (181-169) and by bowling a perfect 300 to A-State’s 169 in the final game.
The NCAA website will be streaming the qualifying round in Ohio this weekend live before handing coverage over to ESPNU Saturday.
A tape delay version of the broadcast will be on ESPN on Sunday from 3-5 p.m.
