Why it is important to De-stress and How to do it

It’s inevitable that at some point in your life, you will experience stress. For many people, this can be extremely distressing and it can sometimes be difficult to undertake your day-to-day activities and routines when you are pre-occupied by problems and issues that concern you.

Chronic stress can have a seriously detrimental impact on your body as it can also impose challenges on your immune system and increase the risk of illness and disease. At its most advanced stage, chronic stress can also lead to heart-disease and the possibility of stroke, and should therefore be regularly monitored as a means of minimising its effects and impact upon your health and wellbeing.

Fortunately, there are simple and effective means of reducing the impact of stress and anxiety in your life and can often involve doing things that you already enjoy. These can include activities such as going to the gym, taking a brisk walk or jog, speaking to friends you trust and feel comfortable with, expressing yourself in a diary or journal, doing regular exercise, reading a good book or listening to music, talking a bath with natural oils or having a shower, meditating and practising yoga.

In order to provide your body with the resources it needs to stave off the most debilitating aspects of stress, it’s also very important to maintain a healthy and balanced diet. This is best achieved by avoiding processed foods, eating lots of fruit and vegetables and drinking plenty of water. Herbal tea also helps some people to relax and contains restorative properties that can help to nurture your health and wellbeing. It is also important to limit your consumption of caffeine as this can often make people feel agitated, adding to your overall stress-burden.
