What Weight Loss Factors Should You and Your Doctor Discuss?

When you want to start losing weight, it’s paramount that you first consult your doctor, especially if you have any medical conditions that could have an affect on your wellbeing if you try to lose weight the wrong way for you. However, as this is a tricky conversation to have sometimes, there are a few talking points that can get you started.

Firstly, make sure that both you and your doctor agree that your wellness will improve if you lose weight. Ask your doctor about testing your cholesterol and glucose levels, as well as checking for any other health concerns. If the results all come back as they should, and your BMI is within a healthy range, your doctor may advise you not to lose weight at all. However, if this is not the case, your doctor can help you determine what a healthy range for you is and set goals to reach it.

Once your healthy range has been set, bring up the topic of exercise. Though you must absolutely exercise if you want lasting weight loss results, you need to bear in mind that not all exercises are right or safe for everyone to do. If you have a prior health condition, or you’ve spent the last 10 years sitting on a sofa, it’s probably not a good idea for you to run a marathon on day one. Your doctor can tell you how to begin, and set a safe and motivating pace.

Medications and surgery is another likely topic to come up during your consultation. If you are an extreme case, these weight loss measures may be the best option for you, but in other cases they should be avoided as they can be risky to your wellness. If you are currently on other medications, you might find that certain foods or activities are unsafe, or that your weight loss is slower, and you need to understand this before you proceed with your weight loss plan.

Finally, healthy eating should be discussed with your physician as you might need to develop an eating plan to get you through the first days and weeks, or be referred to a dietary specialist. You need to make sure that you’re eating the right amount of nutrients, or your wellness may suffer.  Remember, you shouldn’t only consult your doctor, but heed their advice seriously if you want to lose weight safely and successfully.
