US Embassy Launches Photography Contest to Mark Press Freedom Day
The U.S. Embassy is conducting a photography contest from April 28-May 9 to mark World Press Freedom Day 2014.
Themed ‘The Power of Media Freedom’ the contest is open to participants of all ages in Sri Lanka and Maldives to submit an original photograph depicting the theme.
The Embassy will also launch its official Instagram page @USEmbSL in conjunction with the contest. Participants from Sri Lanka and Maldives must submit their Instagram and Twitter entries using hashtag #MediaFreedomSL and #MediaFreedomMaldives respectively to the Embassy’s Twitter handle or Instagram page: @USEmbSL.
On May 21, a special panel of judges will pick winners for Sri Lanka and Maldives, awarding them with smartphones.
Since 1993, the World Press Freedom Day has been commemorated annually on May 3 to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, to evaluate press freedom around the world and to promote free media so all citizens of a country have access to news and a right to be informed.
