Banish back pain
It is shocking to learn that around 7.6 million working days were lost last year, due to back-related pain. Behind stress, back pain is the next most common reason for long-term sickness. It is, therefore, vital for all employers and employees to have a good knowledge of how to protect their backs, to help protect their general health and corporate wellness.
Strained ligaments or muscles, bad posture, wear and tear and stress can all contribute to back pain, and it is an ailment that most people will experience at some point during their lives (although in most cases it is not serious).
If you are experiencing back pain, the best treatment of all is to try to stay active. It is very tempting to rest up when suffering from back pain, but it is now widely recommended that the best course of action is to keep going with normal daily activities, using painkillers if necessary. Staying immobile will actually weaken your back muscles and cause recovery to take longer. There are also specific exercises that you can do to strengthen your core muscles and back and improve your general wellbeing.
At your desk, you should avoid being sedentary for hours by changing position regularly. You should also be aware of the correct seating and desk position: make sure that your chair height is correct and that your computer screen is in the right position. If you’re not sure, you are entitled to ask for a health and safety assessment.
Keep an eye on your posture, to prevent repetetive strain injury. Bear in mind that your thighs should form right angles with your body, or slope slightly down, with your feet resting firmly on the floor. Take regular breaks from your desk and move around the office. In your personal life, ensuring that you are exercising regularly and not carrying any excess weight can also help prevent putting strain on your back.
If your job involves lifting, you must also make sure that you know the safe way to do this, to prevent injury.
