Yes it’s a Scientific study. No, I don’t know why.
There are some studies which expand the knowledge of humanity as a race, there are others which quash myths and urban legends and there are even those which make the unbelievable start to seem real. Unfortunately for every good study there’s a frivolous and time wasting one. These are, in their own way, just as important as all of the others. They help to solidify the things that we already know and though this might seem a little pointless, it’s sometimes important for us to know something scientifically as well as through common sense. And we all know at least one person who doesn’t even have common sense.
So the study which has riled me up a little bit today is one which has proven that obese kids are more influenced by food advertisements than those of a normal weight. It’s thought that this might be a contributory factor towards obesity in those children. I think they’re probably right; it’d make sense for kids who have a sweet tooth and proof of said sweet tooth in their weight, to be more influenced by ads which advertise sweet things. It’s like; chocolate advertisements are going to be more effective on people who already like chocolate and care adverts aren’t going to work too well on people who don’t drive.
So what does this mean moving forwards? It could be that stricter regulations are put onto the companies who advertise these products, making sure no more than a certain amount of these adverts can be aired a day or similar. It could also mean that certain products won’t be able to advertise at all. This is much more likely in the USA where obesity is a more pressing issue, but it could eventually be enacted in the UK too. Will we see fatty products go the same way of the cigarette in our lifestyles? Do you think we should? Let us know what you think!
