Braces as an Adult: What You Don’t Have to Fear

By Brooke Chaplan

Getting braces as an adult has become more of a norm than an exception to the rule these days. According to Mar Orthodontics, nearly half of all orthodontic patients in America are actually adults, so you are definitely not alone if you are considering braces. About 1 million adults over the age of 18 wear braces! Here are a few points to consider if you are thinking about getting braces in adulthood.

Time

Many adults shy away from considering braces, thinking they will have to wear them for several years. They recall childhood braces, and friends who wore their braces for years on end. But most adults will only have to wear braces an average of 12 to 20 months in most cases. It is a good idea to discuss your treatment plan with your Edmonton orthodontist.

Invisible Options

Adults can already be self-conscious about their dental problems, so the thought of metal braces often deters adults from pursuing corrective work at all. There are much more subtle options available to adults seeking to correct orthodontic issues. Options include clear braces or Invisalign trays. Both options are great for the more self-conscious adult.

Not Too Late

Many adults believe that orthodontic issues are just childhood concerns. However, it is never too late to correct your bite, or crowded and crooked teeth. Procedures for adults might be slightly different than in childhood. For example, adults may have to have a few teeth extracted, or removed, prior to braces. But, it is never too late to correct concerns that have plagued you for some time.

Adjusting to Braces

Getting braces at any age may come with some discomfort. You may also experience difficulty eating or speaking initially. It will take some time to adjust to wearing braces, whether you are 16 or 60. Maintaining good oral hygiene will help with your adjustment.
It is never too late to correct your orthodontic challenges, and to get the smile you have always wanted. More and more adults are making the decision to get braces, and with today’s technology, there are many options to choose. Correcting your smile could be a major step in improving your self-esteem and self-confidence. The first step is finding an orthodontist or group you trust to answer your questions and to care for your orthodontic concerns. You could be on your way to the smile of your dreams as an adult.
