Getting tested for a sexually-transmitted infection (STI) is a simple and fast procedure. In the UK, there are clinics that specialise in sexual health and they offer tests and provide treatment for most STIs.
For some people, the biggest step in getting tested for an STI is simply getting in the door of a sexual health or genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic because you might feel embarrassed or ashamed. The clinic staff are professionals who are focused on helping you by finding out what’s wrong, then getting you the right treatment.
All services are confidential and you can go to a sexual health clinic even if you are under the age of 16. You don’t even have to give your own name if you don’t want to and your GP won’t be informed unless you give your permission. However, you will have to give the right contact details so you can get your results as quickly as possible. Most clinics will offer an appointment system as well as a drop-in clinic so you can find a time that’s most convenient for you.
What tests you undergo at a sexual health or GUM clinic will depend on the honest answers you give to the doctor or nurse dealing with you. You will be asked about your sex life, any instances of unprotected sex and any symptoms you might be having. Tests include urine or blood samples, vaginal swabs and examination of your genitals.
Depending on what kind of test you have undergone, you may get the results on the same day and be put on a course of treatment, usually antibiotics, to deal with any infection. Other tests take longer and you can tell the clinic how you want to receive those results – for example, by text, a telephone call or in a letter.
If you test positive for an STI, you will have a follow-up appointment at the clinic to discuss your treatment options. More serious infections, such as HIV, cannot be cured and you will be referred to a specialist for treatment options.
