Could Changing Your Morning Habits Help You Lose Weight?

Whether you’re a morning person or not, there are choices you make in the first hour or two after you get up that affect your wellbeing for the rest of the day, especially if you want to lose weight. There are three habits in particular that really shape you and your day.

Firstly, start your day by getting a bit sweaty. You already know that when you exercise regularly, you burn more calories, and so if you get that box ticked first thing in the morning, anything else that happens during the day won’t derail your wellness efforts. You won’t have to have a workout looming over you when you finish work, and research has shown that when you work out in the morning, you actually exercise harder and longer than if you were to do your workout in the afternoon or evening.

Next, do you leave the house in the morning without eating? There’s a reason why breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it boosts your metabolism, which increases the amount of calories that you burn. You also need to eat breakfast because it gives you the energy you need for your morning workout, so opt for small, protein-packed, easily digestible meals. Even if you’re not planning to cycle to work or go for a jog before you go into the office, skipping breakfast still doesn’t help your weight loss because you’ll only end up snacking later to get the energy fix you need. Research shows that for this, and many other reasons, when you eat breakfast regularly you are more likely to lose weight and keep it off those who skip the first meal of the day.

Finally, make sure you’re forming the right choices when you grab your takeaway morning coffee. There’s nothing wrong with getting that caffeine fix on the way to work, and coffee can even help you to endure longer workouts, but there are certain choices on that coffee shop menu that you shop steer clear of. If weight loss is your goal, then a speciality coffee with an extra 500 calories of whipped cream and a chocolatey drizzle is not the best idea, especially if that cup of coffee is washing down an icing-smothered scone or crumbly muffin. Have a healthy breakfast before you leave the house, and then go for a small black coffee with a touch of milk and sweetener when you’re out and about. That way, you’ll get your daily dose of caffeine without packing on the calories before you’ve even reached the office.
