Why Exactly Do Obese People Struggle With Weight Loss?
When you’re obese, your wellbeing depends on losing weight but it seems to be harder to achieve for you than it is for others. Though the reason why wasn’t known until now, scientists have managed to pinpoint exactly why obese people don’t lose much weight despite going on a vigorous diet.
The study was carried out by researchers at Sydney’s Garvan Institute of Medical Research, who found that an appetite-stimulating chemical known as the Neuropeptide (NPY) plays a major role in controlling whether your body burns or conserves energy. According to the study, when your body takes in less energy or is on a diet, high levels of Neuropeptide signal to your body that it is in a starvation mode, and so you start to store as much energy as possible.
However, this doesn’t mean the end for your wellness if you are obese, as co-author of the study, Professor Herzog, says that though the major obesity epidemic has made it challenging for researchers to trick the body to lose weight because of NPY, now that the team has identified the exact brain circuitry, new drugs can be now developed to target and control these types of neurons.
Herzog said in his report, which was published in the journal Cell Metabolism, that readers should also note that the study proved how ineffective and useless fad diets are for weight loss. He concluded by saying that until a new NPY targeting drug can be produced, weight loss needs to be done over a long period of time and people severely underestimate how important this is.
