Meditation May Reduce Pain From Inflammatory Conditions

Recent research into the effects of meditation suggests that it may be useful in helping to reduce the symptoms of chronic inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis, asthma and inflammatory bowel disease. It’s believed that approach to reducing stress can offer an alternative or complement to regular treatments, as well as being low cost and easy to perform wherever you are.

For centuries, mindfulness meditation-based techniques have been used as a way of combating stress and helping to reduce the pain associated with chronic inflammatory conditions. Generally, these techniques focus on breathing slowly and calmly, placing your thoughts on the sensations of the body and using yogic techniques. Chronic inflammatory conditions are made worse by stress, so being able to reduce this through meditation could help reduce the risk of pain or alleviate the symptoms.

Researchers split participants into two different groups, one using mindfulness meditation techniques, and one using the training concepts from the Health Enhancement Programme which consisted of music therapy, physical exercises and nutritional education – every element of the HEP was created to be an equivalent to the mindfulness programme.

Before and after the trial, the participants were put under psychological stress by way of the Treir Social Stress Test as well as having capsaicin cream applied to the skin to induce an inflammation. The results showed that although both groups showed less mental stress levels, only those taking part in the mindfulness meditation techniques experienced a physical reduction in inflammation. This study has proven the positive effects meditation can have on the mental and emotional stability of those who perform it, and the impact it can have on those suffering with chronic inflammatory conditions. It’s important to note that this is not a cure all treatment – it can offer you some help with your symptoms though.
