Bacopa Extract: Can It Really Improve Memory?

The wellbeing market seems so full of herbal supplements meant to improve physical functioning, that one could be forgiven for feeling utterly confused! Among the natural remedies thought to help cognitive performance, Bacopa extract is one of the lesser known. However, it is gaining increasing recognition from the medical establishment, who has now confirmed its efficacy through several research studies.

Bacopa extract comes from the wetland plant ‘water hyssop’, a species we may be more used to seeing in aquariums. Used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine, it is claimed to be a great memory enhancer. Research undertaken in 2006 in India stands as testament to this claim, where a trial looking at age-associated memory impairment found that Bacopa extract caused a significant improvement in cognitive performance among a group of elderly adults. Bacopa extract may also have a positive effect on mood, according to a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. The 2010 study claimed multiple positive benefits to taking the supplement, including anxiety and depression as well as cognitive performance. A 2011 study from Australia concurs with these claims, where results showed significantly improved memory acquisition and retention among older adults. It seems that Bacopa extract is on the way to becoming a useful supplement for helping cognitive functioning in those of a mature age.

The three studies in question reported some side effects associated with taking the drug. The main category of side effect was in the area of gastrointestinal difficulties, including increased stool frequency, cramps and occasional nausea. The side effects were judged to be minor, though they should be taken into account by those already experiencing gastrointestinal troubles. Bacopa extract is otherwise judged to be perfectly safe for use as a wellness supplement. As always, do not forget to inform your doctor of any supplements you are taking – there is always a risk of contraindication with any drug, and only the full sharing of information can ensure your wellness.
