If Your Mouth Could Talk…
When you consider ways to improve your oral health, what comes to mind? I’d immediately jump to thoughts of tooth brushes, dental floss, mouthwash and the dreaded almost phantasmal dentist himself. Because there are such clear cut ways for looking after your teeth it can be really easy to forget that your mouth is as much a part of your body as your heart is. The ebb and flow of everything which goes on within you is going to affect your mouth as much as anything else. It’s important to take this into account when picking minerals and vitamins to pull into your diet.
It can be tricky to know exactly what each vitamin does, there are simply so many and their names aren’t exactly self-explanatory! We’re here to help; we at Yourwellness have put together a list of the most important vitamins to your mouth and just what they do to help you:
Vitamin A
Bacteria is prone to building up in the mouth and the constant wash of saliva is used to pull those bacteria down into the gut where they die in your stomach acid. Vitamin A is essential to maintaining the flow of saliva and ensuring your mouth never becomes full of bacteria! It’s also used to keep the different tissues in your mouth nice and healthy. Beef liver, sweet potatoes, melon and spinach are the very best sources of vitamin A.
Vitamin B1
Your gums maintain their rosy hue thanks to this vitamin and it also helps to prevent inflammation of the tongue. Vitamin B1 is best found in sunflower seeds, most vegetables and pork.
Vitamin B2
Helps to prevent cheilosis which is a condition that causes the corners of your mouth to fissure and scale. Mushrooms, dairy products and lean steak are fantastic sources of vitamin B2
Don’t forget that as well as eating the suggest foods you can get these minerals in targeted supplements like multivitamin tablets. No excuses if you don’t like the foods on offer!
