Do Condoms Decrease Men’s Sexual Pleasure?

Condoms are an important part of safe sex for millions of people around the world. They help to protect sexual health and wellbeing by guarding against the majority of unplanned pregnancies and reducing the chances of catching a sexually transmitted infection. In spite of this, they are often regarded as an unpopular choice of contraceptive by many, due to a perception that they make sex less pleasurable for both men and women.

According to two new studies, these fears are unfounded. Sex using condoms is just as enjoyable as sex without condoms, according to the research.

The study found that male respondents reported that they felt equally stimulated whilst wearing a condom as when not wearing one, putting paid to the analogy that is frequently stated, that wearing a condom is like ‘showering with a rain coat on’. Men also reported that they did not struggle to maintain their erection whilst putting on a condom, which should be reassuring news for those who fear that using a condom will break the flow of lovemaking.

Women were also spoken to as part of the study, and the majority said that they found sex using condoms to be equally pleasurable or, in some cases, even more pleasurable than sex without. They cited the use of lubricant as the cause of their satisfaction, saying that condoms with lubricant benefited their sexual wellness by increasing their ability to reach orgasm during penetrative sex.

The study was carried out by researchers at Indiana University’s School of Public Health, and, as part of the study, over 1,800 men and 2,500 women were questioned as part of a daily diary study conducted on the internet.

This research also highlighted the fact that men were more likely than women to purchase condoms, and, as a result, women were less clear about the materials and lubricants used in their manufacture.
