Vitamin D, The Sunshine Vitamin

We all know what calcium does, don’t we? It’s one of the minerals which is best understood and on saying the word I’m sure you all either think of milk or bones. Well, did you know that for all the calcium you’ve put into your diet to have any effect at all there’s a special vitamin you’re going to need to get into your diet as well? That vitamin is vitamin D and it’s one of the trickiest ones simply because there’s not a massive amount of food with a lot of it in. We get most of our vitamin D from sunshine which is one of the many reasons that going out and catching some rays is important to your wellbeing!

The winter months can make it very difficult to get enough vitamin D, what with the lessened sunlight and people being inside more. There are parts of the world like Iceland or Alaska where it’s dark almost perpetually for a good chunk of this period. The people in these areas are massively at risk of vitamin D deficiencies and as such it’s very important for them to make sure they’re getting enough in their diets.

Vitamin D is largely found in egg yolks, specially fortified milk or cereal and fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel etc.). If these foods aren’t for you then it will be worth investing in some supplements to help ease the burden and ensure that you stay healthy. Supplements aren’t the best alternative to a healthy and balanced diet but if you take them while you’re eating relatively well, without too much in the way of processed food they can give you the boost you need!

Remember, it’s not enough to just drink your milk! You’re going to need that vitamin D to keep your bones healthy and maintain a balanced level of health and wellbeing.
