Dealing With Your Asthma This Summer

When it comes to asthma it’s always better to be safe than sorry. The fact is, the condition is potentially deadly and if you don’t take the right precautions it could be your life on the line. Asthma affects the very smallest of your airways, they’re known as bronchioles. It builds up excess mucus in these airways which can make it very hard to breathe, in the event of an asthma attack, inflammation occurs which can close up your airways entirely and kill you!

In the summer months the allergens which effect asthma are in a much higher supply. Pollen chokes the air, the air is humid and perfect for mould growth and dust can build up more than you’d expect. It can be much more difficult for you to avoid the allergens which are much more likely to set off a potentially deadly asthma attack. The best course of action is avoidance but it’s not always possible to avoid them all. If you work hard to keep your house clean, mould spores and dust shouldn’t be an issue.

Pollen is the tricky one. There’s a pollen count on most good weather forecasts or on weather sites online which will tell you just how much pollen is in the air on that day. If you can avoid going outside on days with high pollen counts then you should. If you can’t then make sure you have your inhaler with you at all times and you’re prepared to use it should you start to find it harder to breathe!

A clear plan of action is one of your best tools for making sure your asthma doesn’t affect you too much in the summer months. The better prepared you are the better protected that you are! This goes for you and your children, you can never be too careful after all.
