Hot Water And Papaya: Mother Nature’s Contraceptives For Men
The contraceptive pill has made it easy for women to take responsibility for birth control, but as it comes with many potential side effects, and some women don’t won’t to risk their wellness by taking chemicals and synthetic hormones, when is it your partner’s turn to step up to the plate?
For those of you who prefer more natural forms of contraception, and making your man responsible for it, it can be as simple as picking up some papaya and sticking the kettle on! This is an ancient method of contraception, first mentioned in the writings of Hippocrates, though when you suggest it to your partner you may want to brush over a few of the finer details of what it involves.
For this natural contraceptive method, a man needs to consume papaya (so far so good) and then bathe or submerge his testes in 116 degrees Fahrenheit water, which is just below the pain threshold, for forty-five minutes each day for 21 days. Ouch! The reason it works is that sperm don’t like heat, because they need to be several degrees cooler than body temperature to be viable baby-makers. Whilst normal cell death happens at 108 degrees Fahrenheit, sperm cell death occurs at 95 degrees (F) so this method will kill off the sperm for a long but limited period of time.
When it comes to papaya, the benefits to your wellbeing are numerous. They contain antibacterial seeds, are rich in enzymes and studies have also found that papayas completely remove the sperm from a male monkey’s ejaculation, and they significantly reduced the sperm counts in rats. When the rats ingested even more papaya, they became completely infertile, and the researchers stated that using compounds from papaya seeds on a long-term, daily basis is a safe and effective male contraceptive.
In Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, the method has been tested by both men and women who took a teaspoon of the seeds each day. However, it’s perhaps more palatable to take seeds as part of a fruit smoothie. Grab half a papaya, throw in a teaspoon of seeds and maybe a banana or some other fruit, and give it to your partner. It’s certainly preferable to the hot water method!
