How Obesity Means Different Things In Different Places
In the developed world we’re more than familiar with the terrors of morbid obesity. We are all aware of just how many different ways there are for it to kill you and we all live with an idealised notion of the human form which we all pursue (some more than others). These are things we take for granted and things that we’ve lived with since we were kids. They’re so normal to us that it can be tricky to accept that this isn’t the norm worldwide and in some parts of the world being bigger just means you’ve got the wealth to be bigger. Education is one of our most potent weapons in battling disease and conditions like obesity. If people don’t know how bad it is for them then they’re less likely to do something. In the west there’s not a single person who’ll think being obese is fine for their health. Whether or not they do anything about it is entirely their prerogative, but they know.
The Middle East is a part of the world which has become very wealthy in the past few decades. They discovered oil and this made them incredibly rich. With all the benefits in terms of socio-economic growth come the downsides of the developed world. Obesity is one of the main downsides but up until recently people simply didn’t realise the depth of danger that being obese creates.
Weight clinics have opened up in the United Arab Emirates to cater to the obese rich. So far they’ve performed more than a thousand surgeries and this number is set to keep rising as more people learn of the danger obesity poses to their health. The fact is that though weight loss surgery might be effective, so is diet and exercise. All it takes is the right amount of determination and you can do anything!
