Could Barre Classes Be The Perfect Fitness Regime For You?

Barre classes use the famous stationary handrails that ballerinas are often seen training with. These handrails have provided a unique opportunity to many barre studios which have become increasingly popular, as the value of the barre in exercise is becoming more widely known. The dancer Lotte Burke opened a studio in London during the 50s, proving that this is not just a brief fitness craze, but a serious form of exercise that produces serious results. The fitness classes use the barre for stretching and strengthening, focusing on leg muscles and glutes, as well as core muscles. Occasionally additional props such as weights and mats may be used. If the idea of being as strong and graceful as a ballerina has inspired you, you may find some advice for beginners helpful in building up your fitness and confidence.

Firstly, focus on quality rather than quantity. As with any exercise, it only works if you do it right. 100 press-ups that are half-hearted, or performed in a weak position, will never give the same effect as 10 press-ups performed excellently. It may be frustrating to start off slow, but learning the importance of precision and form will help to focus your muscles and give them a good workout. Don’t expect to look too graceful at first – everyone starts somewhere. Your muscles probably won’t be used to the types of actions they will be performing, and so you might start of shaky and wobbly, and finding your muscles burning. This is normal, and focusing on your actions rather than your appearance is key to getting the most out of your movements.

You will be pushed outside of your comfort zone – usually people who choose the types of exercise they do will stick to what they like and are best at. In the classes, the training will cover all kinds of areas and challenge you, but this is simply what a good fitness regime should do. Finally, bear in mind that barre fitness is not ballet. It is inspired by ballet, but you don’t need to be an experienced dancer to join in. This is a fitness regime that has room for everybody.
