BB, SPF 15 and a Good Flannel: Your Anti-Ageing Recipe
You may be sceptical about anti-ageing fads, but according to Journalist, Broadcaster and Author Rosie Millard, there’s no better place to turn than the latest trends when considering those small adjustments that can offer a significant impact to your skin wellness. For Rosie, if a new product is creating a significant buzz in the industry, there’s usually something behind it.
‘The latest contender is the BB cream which stands for ‘Beauty Benefit’ Cream,’ Rosie explains. ‘This product is an all-in-one product that has experienced a near unstoppable rise over the past few months. Its multiple benefits include a light, tinted coverage, and is often used as an alternative to foundation…What’s more, it contains SPF 35. Because, let’s face it, the best thing you can do for your skin is to protect it from the sun. Skin cells are damaged over time by exposure to UV light (and pollution), which can age prematurely and make skin behave and look old before its time.’
‘I realised the importance of this a few years ago, on a cookery course in the Italian region of Umbria,’ Rosie notes. ‘My fellow culinary enthusiasts were two beautiful women from Nashville. Both were almost 70 years old, but looked about 50. Their secret? They had never been out in the sun. I looked at their unlined faces and vowed there and then never to leave the house without sunscreen. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t burned – any sun exposure can accelerate ageing, bring on wrinkles and cause pigment changes. So invest in a hat and choose a moisturiser containing SPF 15 or above plus anti-ageing technology to support the skin’s natural renewal processes and withstand daily assaults by the elements. This applies to winter and summer, too.’
Rosie adds, ‘I’m a big fan of face flannels. They might seem old-fashioned, but can exfoliate your face as effectively as an expensive scrub. When you’re in a warm bath, soak up the steam, to open your pores. Then, get a nice clean flannel, drench it and wash your face thoroughly, with unsoapy water. Lie for three or four minutes with the warm (not boiling) flannel over your face. After the bath, splash cold water on your face, apply moisturiser and drink a glass of cool water. The perfect mini-spa treatment.’
