Tears can be divided into three different layers: Lipid layer that comprises oil, aqueous layer that comprises water and mucous layer that comprises mucin.
Basal tears are produced for lubrication, Reflex tears occur when the eye is exposed to a foreign body or irritating gas (like from cut onions) and Psychogenic tears are shed due to emotional reasons. Besides lubricating the eye and flushing away debris, tears also improve the image that forms on the retina by smoothing any irregularities on the surface of the eyeball.
